Bates Steps Up to Bench

Summit County's chief criminal prosecutor, Matthew Bates, is stepping up to the bench of the Third District Court.  The Utah Senate confirmed his appointment by a unanimous vote.    Governor Gary Herbert appointed Bates to fill a vacancy on the bench left by the retirement of Judge Charlene Barlow.  The Third District covers Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.  Bates has served with the Summit County Attorney's office since 2011.  Before that, he was an appellate attorney in both criminal and civil matters at the Utah State Attorney General's office from 2006 to 2008.  He also worked in the Salt Lake County District Attorney's office from 2008 to 2011.  Bates will be working at the Summit County Attorney's office until the end of June.
